Enya our four-legged CASA Volunteer!

Enya, Texas CASA’s First Courthouse Facility Dog! Texas CASA has 71 programs in the state of Texas and Enya is thrilled to be the 1st Courthouse Facility Dog! Enya is a 3-year-old Labrador Retriever that was breed in California and raised by a Texas Puppy Raiser for Canine Companions for Independence until she was 18 months old. At 18- months old Enya was sent to Canine Companions in Irving, Texas to complete her training. When Enya turned 24 months old she was eligible to be matched with a handler to do her amazing work! Michelle Cobern, Executive Director of CASA of Titus, Camp and Morris Counties studied trauma in children and discovered the work that Baylor Scott & White was doing with Canine Companions. After visiting the state of the art Canine Companions Campus in Irving and observing the level of training and skills their dogs have, Michelle decided CASA must have a Canine Companion Dog to help the children in foster care. After living at the Canine Companion Campus for two weeks and learning how to become a handler, Michelle was matched with Enya. “Enya has changed EVERYTHING we do!” stated Cobern. Enya works a minimum of 20 hours a week, has a work uniform and even her own business cards. It’s proven that Enya lowers the blood pressure of those she is in contact with and helps the anxiety level of people in the court room, especially our CASA children. Enya’s attends all court hearings in Titus, Camp and Morris Counties. Enya also participates in parent/child visits. Children in foster care may only see their parents once a week for an hour. As you can imagine this is a very anxious time therefore Enya is there to assist and play ball with the family or just lay by their feet. Enya can perform up to 40 commands. Enya is licensed, insured and has the best temperament for working with children. Enya provides a sense of security, safety, comfort and love to all children.
Enya joined the CASA team on August 12, 2016. Even though Enya’s journey with CASA is just beginning she has already helped so many children!
